The café is open at the Beacon International Centre most Sundays between 4.00 and 6.00 pm. It provides a quiet, relaxed environment for international students, residents and visitors to Stafford. It’s a place where they can come to unwind, chat, make new friends and practice their English. There’s usually an opportunity to sample home made cakes and biscuits, as well as other foods.
The café is run by a team of volunteers who organise the programme of different activities and special events.
Global Café started in 2006 and over the years almost 400 students have come through its doors; many of those have gone back to their own country after having finished their degrees.
The team’s aim is to welcome the students and make them feel ‘at home’ whilst they are away from their families. Each week there is a different activity, eg cookery, table games and table tennis, talks etc, and in the summer there are walks, outings and the occasional BBQ.
